'Resilience' Homework

What is resilience? Why is it important?

In my opinion, resilience is the ability to 'bounce back' after something bad or difficult happens.

It can sometimes take courage, hard work and persistence to bounce back from bad things that happen.

People sometimes need to keep saying to themselves "I can do this, I can get back to normal, I won't let this get me down".

Your homework task is to talk to the class about someone who face hardship but 'bounced back' (was resilient) when something bad happened to them. They made the best of their situation and didn't let the bad thing stop them from being 'the best that they can be'.

Week 1 Term 2 2011

ANZAC Day was on April 25th. What do you know about ANZAC Day? How did you and you family remember ANZAC Day this year? Do you think it is important to remember ANZAC Day?

This week for homework, instead of spelling and basic facts, I would like you to prepare a short, one minute talk about ANZAC Day.

You might like to choose one of the following to talk about:
• “What I Know about ANZAC Day”.
• “How my family remembered ANZAC Day this year”.
• “I think we should/should not keep remembering ANZAC Day because…”
• “We will remember them” is the main message for ANZAC Day. What does this mean?
• Or your own choice about ANZAC Day.

You can choose whether you want to have your talk to the class, or with the smaller ‘news group’. Book which day this week you are having your talk by using the booking sheet on the white board.

If you have any further questions, ask Mr Dobson- remember, he’s happy to help you with your talk any way he can!

making Oobleck

Oobleck is a strange substance. when you touch it, it feels dry and hard, like a solid. When you stop touching it, it spreads out slowly, like a liquid!

Here's how to make it:

Put 2 tablespoons of cornflour in a bowl. Add a tablespoon of water to the cornflour, stirring it well. Keep adding a few drops of water at a time until the mixture is thick an creamy. Pick up the oobleck and roll it between your fingers. What do you notice? Stop rolling it. What happens?

Making Casein PLastic

Make Casein Plastic
Casein is a plastic that is made from milk. It was one of the first plastics ever made and was used for making things like buttons.

What you need:
An adult to help you
2/3 of a cup of milk
8 teaspoons of vinegar
a pot
a plate
a stirring spoon

What you do:
Pour the milk into the pot and get an adult to help you bring it gently to the boil. When the milk begins to steam and bubble, dribble in the vinegar, stirring the milk all the time. You will see lumps begin to form.
When the little lumps clump together to make a big solid lump get the adult to pour off the liquid and then tip your casein plastic lump onto a plate.
When it cools a little bit mould it into a shape, like a button then leave it to harden over night.
You’ll end up with hard casein plastic. The first plastic that was ever invented - it’s a bit different from the plastic we’re used to!
